Change your career with us

Tell us a bit about yourself

I have a Bachelor’s degree of Arts majoring in Economics and Geography, and a Master’s degree in Planning. However, I partnered with my friends to start an event company after I graduated. I had great experience in Entertainment Industry, where I had my understanding of the business cycle and developed interest in digital marketing.

Why did you choose the field of data analytics/business intelligence?

As my interest in digital marketing grew, I realized the power of data. It is fascinating how powerful data could be, and how we can manipulate data to produce business insight.

Do you have any pivotal/memorable event to share from your life that lead to what you are doing now?

My biggest push in switching my career is my son. During this stage of my life, I need to find a field that I’m passionate about while in the meantime, grant me the privilege of maintaining a healthy work life balance.

Would you share some previous worries related to your career that you would tell your past self not to be nervous about and face it head on?

I once worried that my past experience is not related to the field of data analytics, however, it turns out, my understanding in business and my communication skills are crucial for being a data analyst, and my current employer told me I got hired because of the way I talked during the interview.

Any words of encouragement/advice for current and future students looking to enter the field of analytics?

  • Have confidence and define your personality. Know your advantages and really leverage them.
  • Do not be afraid of the technical stuff. If you do some research, you will realize that technicality is not the most challenging part of being a data analyst, and you will be ready if you finish this program.
  • Starting treating yourself as a data analyst from the beginning of the program. Practice your problem-solving skills and communication skills along the way. Network with instructors and fellows. Find gaps in your study and try to solve them.

Can you provide us with any insight into how the interview process was like?

I got questioned a lot about why I switched my career, and I think they valued that I have a business mindset.
I also got questioned about scenarios of doing a project, such as how to deal with short window of time, how to deal with disagreements.
There are also some questions about UI, such as naming three most important UI strategies in creating reports.

In other interviews, I also got asked about statistics (when to use mean, medium, mode) and some SQL questions (I was not required to write SQL, just identify which clause to use).

What made you choose WeCloudData over other service providers? Was there something that stood out to you about our program that solidified your decision?

My friend attended WeCloudData first, and she landed a job in a big bank. I also compared WeCloudData with another Chinese institution, and I think having local instructors teaching everything in English is very necessary.

What did you find most enjoyable or interesting about WeCloudData while being a student? Was there any aspect of our course curriculum or teaching style that stood out to you?

The course is very engaging, and we are able to raise any questions during any time. The teaching assistant is also very helpful during the rest of the day.
