What do DevOps Engineers do?

DevOps engineers straddle the world of application development and IT operations. They provision resilient, highly available cloud infrastructures and set up automated application build pipelines.

By enabling developers with flexible, highly scalable platforms to deploy their apps, businesses can continuously serve valuable products to customers without fail. As such, DevOps engineers are engaged in any of the following activities:

  • Meet with business stakeholders to understand business goals and objectives
  • Work tightly with development, operations and security teams
  • Design, build and monitor deployment systems and applications
  • Identify processes for automation
  • Seamlessly integrate application development with deployment to production systems
  • Liaise with product, business, and technology teams
Who can become a DevOps Engineer?

While DevOps engineers don’t strictly require you to have computer science, software engineering, or IT backgrounds, it is beneficial to have a basic understanding of information & technology. Basic competencies in Python and Linux OS will be advantageous. How much do DevOps Engineers earn?

DevOps Engineers are very well compensated! Base salary and total package may vary a lot depending on the responsibilities.  

As a Junior DevOps Engineer in Canada, you can expect to be paid on average $70K and well over $100K+ as a Senior DevOps Engineer.

As a Junior DevOps Engineer in the U.S., you can expect to be paid on average US$74K and close to US$200K as a Senior DevOps Engineer.
